Options limited for BUPA insured patients having cataract surgery

BUPA insured patients should know that their options at the time of cataract surgery may be limited by their policy. It will not be possible to offer BUPA patients laser assisted cataract surgery at Moorfields Private. If the patient wishes to have laser assisted surgery they will need to self fund the entire procedure according to BUPA guidance.

BUPA will also not fund lenses such as the Zeiss trifocal multifocal lens. The patient may be required to pay for their lens choice separately. BUPA state the following; 'BUPA will fund the cost of a standard lens as part of your cataract surgery. In the event that your consultant deems a special, more expensive lens to be clinically appropriate, then you will need to obtain pre-authorisation from BUPA to confirm that they will cover this additional cost. If BUPA will not fund the additional cost then you can pay the hospital directly for the additional cost of the lens'.
