Laser eye surgery by a specialist consultant eye surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital

Did you know that the Laser Eye Surgery Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital performed over 4000 LASIK and LASEK procedures in 2017? We are one of the highest volume laser centres in the country!

Laser Vision Correction

Laser eye surgery has transformed the lives of over 30 million people worldwide over the last 22 years. Since it was first developed in the 1980's, laser technology has advanced exponentially and laser eye surgery is now one of the most technologically advanced surgeries performed. Laser eye surgery is now safer, more accurate and more predictable than ever before.

Advances in lasers and scanning technology  have all combined to make laser eye surgery safer and more predictable. The key to safety is centred on the ability to screen for patients who shouldn't have laser eye surgery, either due to corneal weakness or insufficient corneal thickness. For those who qualify for laser surgery the current generation of eye scanners are some of the most sophisticated devices used in medicine and allow the structure of the cornea and optics of the eye to be evaluated in unparalleled detail. This information guides modern lasers to precise and bespoke treatments based on your eyes, allowing Wavefront guided treatments for the best possible quality of vision after surgery.

Safety and laser eye surgery

The results of laser eye surgery are amazing and life changing. However, your safety matters to us more than anything else. The fact is that not every patient is safe to have laser eye surgery. Most of the pre-operative checks that you'll have at your initial consultation with Mr Angunawela or Ms de Benito are to make sure that it's safe to perform laser eye surgery on your eyes.

Your surgeon will also discuss other specific risk factors such as your general health and family history. You'll be encouraged to ask as any questions or voice any concerns that you may have. You'll also have the reassurance that you will always see  your surgeon, at every visit. Giving you the reassurance that you are in the hands of a consultant surgeon who is responsible for you.

We don't push the limits of safety when it comes to laser surgery. Its not worth it. If you're not suitable, other alternatives such as the Visian ICL lens or clear lens extraction surgery with implantation of multifocal lenses may be an option. And sometimes its just better to stick to your glasses or contact lenses!
